Mobile Laptop
The following applies to a Nokia 8210 interfaced to a standard Toshiba Laptop via their infra-red ports, but should apply to any GSM mobile having infra-red facilities, or wire connection for that matter.
Nokia has an excellent site that allows you to identify whether your moble can be connected in this way and offers software specific to each model of phone. Also, it has good instructions on getting the setup to work!
For the 8210, I needed to download thePC suite for the Nokia 8210 and the Quick Guide to using the Nokia 8210 as a modem with an infrared data connection. For other phones, try this link and select connection methods.
Once the PC infrared link is enabled in hardware (BIOS) and software (check in Control Panel), simply enable infrared on the mobile via the menu and place the phone I-R window next to the laptop's I-R window. The laptop will automatically detect the phone ("another computer nearby"). You need to set up a new connection to your normal ISP but using the mobile modem instead of your laptop's modem (if it has one). Then it is simply a matter of using the Nokia-ISP connection and using your normal email and internet browser, albeit more slowly!
