The Club
About us
The emblem of the Club is taken from the Viking ship of the Sutton
Hoo burial site across the river.
The clubhouse provides members with facilities enabling them to enjoy
their sport to the full. The Club bar is open on Saturdays,
Sundays and Bank holidays and visiting yachtsmen are always made
welcome. The clubhouse provides a convivial location not only
for social events but also for lectures and RYA classes, for the Club
is an RYA teaching establishment which runs a variety of courses
catering for all levels. Other facilities include showers, sun
deck and garden barbeque area. Members and visitors are able to
berth their dinghies alongside the nearby Club pontoon and there is a
lock-up available for miscellaneous gear and outboard motors.
A new extension is in process of being fitted out by the members
themselves. This will provide much-needed new space for training, improved social facilities and extended changing and showering areas. The view from the top floor is unrivalled.
There are now around 300 members, most of whom keep their boats on
the Suffolk rivers. The main Club activity centres on the summer
cruise programme which arranges a wide variety of weekend and mid-week
cruises, both locally up and down the east coast and across to the continent. The Club sometimes sails as a flotilla to encourage less experienced members.
Training continues to play a big part in our club's activities; we are
a recognised training establishment by the
RYA and offer winter evening classes
for Yachtmaster, Dayskipper, VHF/DSC, and GMDS
We also have an approved examiner for the ICC.
There is also a busy social programme with
dinners arranged once a month in winter, interspersed with a Saturday
evening and Sunday morning lecture programme .
The Club is affiliated to the RYA .
Members are represented on several local and national
organizations, such as the
Harwich Area Sailing Association , the
Alde and Ore Association and the
Cruising Association .
The facilities of the Club are used by several organisations, including the Woodbridge and Melton Riverside Action Group , the Nancy Blackett Trust , the RNLI , and the Suffolk College , for its Art classes.
