Training
The club is an RYA recognised teaching establishment and welcomes non-members as well as members on its Day Skipper and Yachtmaster courses. These include sessions on navigation, meteorology, boat management and seamanship. The training programme aims to help both inexperienced and experienced sailors gain the qualifications needed to become safe and competent yachtsmen and women.
This year's Day Skipper and Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper courses start first week of October. Sessions will be held once a week and both courses run for about 20 weeks. The cost of the RYA Day Skipper course will be £185 while Yachtmaster will cost £195, less 20 per cent for club members. The RYA training packs and charts are in addition - price to be advised but about £25. Tutoring will be by experienced yachtsmen Graham Bush and Rod Richens, club Vice Commodore. An enrolment evening for both courses will be held in the clubhouse on 18th September from 7-9pm when prospective students will be able to find out more about the courses.
Other specialist one-day courses are also being planned. These will include; Safety at Sea, Radar Operation, First Aid at Sea and VHF GMDSS radio operator's licence, a legal requirement if there is a radio on board.
